Every Finisher Prize Helps Build a Brighter Future for the Young People of Vilcabamba

Nestled more than 3,500 metres above sea level in the Peruvian Andes, Vilcabamba is a land of breathtaking beauty, where deep valleys, rushing streams and waterfalls lead toward the Amazon rainforest. It is a place rich in history and tradition, but also one that faces significant social and economic challenges.

Most families rely on subsistence farming and livestock, living according to the rhythm of the seasons and cultivating crops such as potatoes, corn, beans and lupins. Due to the lack of employment opportunities, many young people leave their villages in search of a better future in the cities, only to find themselves living in even more difficult conditions.

Since 1993, the parish of Vilcabamba, together with volunteers from Operazione Mato Grosso, has been working to create real opportunities for local communities. Through schools, residential homes and vocational training centres, young people can develop practical skills and build a future in their own valley. Training programmes include woodworking and metalworking for boys, and mosaic craftsmanship for girls, with local cooperatives providing employment opportunities and helping preserve traditional artisan skills.

This year, we have chosen to dedicate the value of the Finisher Prize to supporting this project. Our contribution will help provide education, vocational training and employment opportunities for the young people of Vilcabamba, with special attention to the families most in need. It is a tangible way to support local communities, reduce the migration of young people from the mountains and preserve the unique cultural heritage of the region.
